The protagonist undergoes cryogenics (body freezing) because he has an incurable disease. He wakes up in the 24th century only barely able to deal with the language and customs of the future. He later figures out that it was an elaborate scam and that he was only "vitrified" for three years, during which time a court declared him to be dead. He has to create a new identity; to figure out how to function with no job, no money, no social security number; and to unravel the mystery of who set up the scam. Meanwhile his wife has remarried, his sisters and daughter are fighting over his estate, and lawyers object to his testifying in the court case about his estate because he's legally dead.

2345 is an imaginative novel and a page-turner. It's an intellectual mystery with a well-planned plot that moves rapidly and is filled with surprise twists. The main character, Gilberto Galves is a delightful curmudgeon with a healthy skepticism and an endearing sensitivity to verbal as well as nonverbal communications. The author, Garibaldi Sabio does a beautiful job of illustrating language, especially slang, and its ambiguity in different cultures. His invention of words like “herm” (her and him) are a precious advance on language. He provokes the reader to see the arbitrariness of words and our emotional reactions. Part of the pleasure is the wide range of the author’s knowledge from linguistics to law, science to satire, and the principles to the politics of human behavior. I highly recommend this enjoyable read.
